Study Abroad/Exchange
The Sklenar Center encourages the development of globally engaged
students through the advising, preparation, reorientation and support of
study abroad/exchange. The center provides
highly regarded study abroad and exchange program options in
all academic disciplines and majors,
globally focused internships, research and service opportunities,
knowledgeable, insightful advising and information to students
considering or planning a study abroad experience,
skilled facilitation of the incoming and outgoing exchange process
which includes working closely with students to develop the best
possible experience on campus and abroad,
affordable options for study abroad through financial aid advising
and the generous support of endowed scholarships,
thorough exploration of intercultural topics in preparation for
a student’s success in his or her academic studies and cultural
engagement while abroad and upon return.
Requirements for participation in the study abroad/exchange program
include the following:
(a) meeting all Sklenar Center and host university deadlines for
application, scholarship and course pre-approval
(b) meeting the Sklenar Center minimum GPA of 2.5; host institutions
may have higher GPA minimums
(c) completing the requirements of the course IS 101 Pre-Departure
Topics for Study Abroad the semester prior to travel
(d) remaining enrolled full-time and held in good standing while
studying abroad
Study Abroad Credit
Upon completion of the study abroad program, the student must have
an official transcript from the study abroad institution sent to Birmingham-
Southern College. In order to receive credit, the student must have earned
a grade of “C-” or better in the courses taken abroad. Study abroad courses
may not be similar to courses already completed at the College. Students
must be fully enrolled while abroad.
Study abroad courses, outside of faculty-led programs and independent
contracts, are evaluated as transient credits. Please refer to the Coursework
at Other Institutions section of this catalog for the policies regarding
transient credit. Department chair and Provost’s Office approval is required
for study abroad courses. Study abroad courses may not be used to fulfill
Explorations learning outcomes requirements. Study abroad for at least
a full term may fulfill one Explorations Civic Engagement requirement,
